10 Sep 26 – Treasures from the Royal Philatelic Collection
The Windward Islands, namely Grenada, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago
Arranged by Rod Vousden FRPSL, Honorary Keeper of the Royal Philatelic Collection
The new season of the Royal Philatelic Society London began on 10 September in traditional manner with the members being treated to a display from the Royal Philatelic Collection, shown by gracious permission of HM King Charles III. The subject chosen this time was the Windward Islands of Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, and St Lucia, the material being selected by Rod Vousden FRPSL, Honorary Keeper of the Royal Philatelic Collection, assisted by Stephanie Twohig from the Royal Household.
The period covered ranged from the reign of Queen Victoria to that of King George VI, the days when the majority of stamps were line-engraved. Included among the stamps, many of which were shown in plate blocks, were essays, die proofs, plate proofs and colour trials. Always a pleasure to see are the hand-painted, stamp-size artworks for future stamps, often produced by artists at the main stamps printers, namely Bradbury, Wilkinson, De La Rue and Waterlows. Also shown were first day covers addressed to ‘The King’, namely King George V, famously an avid collector.

Giving the Vote of Thanks, Susan Taylor FRPSL and Nigel Mohammed presented an overview of the stamp issues, plus background information, for the islands featured in the display.
Simon Richards RDP, FRPSL, President of the Society, thanking Rod and Stephanie, said that seeing the material had been a ‘great treat’, before reading the letter to be sent to The King expressing the Society’s appreciation for the privilege of being able to enjoy admiring parts of the Collection.
