Society Medals

Each year the Society offers medals named after famous philatelists who were members, as well as the Society’s Medal, known as the Royal Philatelic Society London Medal.

The Crawford Medal

The Crawford Medal shall be a silver-gilt medal of the approved design and shall be awarded for the most valuable and original contribution to the study and knowledge of philately published in book form during the relevant period.

This Medal is open to world-wide competition. In the case of joint authorship Council may award a Medal to each author, but in the case of books compiled as a result of collaboration on the part of more than two authors, Council may award a Medal to the sponsors or editors of the work instead of to the authors.

The Tapling Medal

The Tapling Medal shall be a silver medal of the approved design and shall be awarded for the best paper, or Supplement published in The London Philatelist dealing with any aspect of philately during the relevant period.

The Tilleard Medal

The Tilleard Medal shall be a silver medal of the approved design and shall be awarded for the best 1 p.m. display of any aspect of philately, given at an ordinary meeting of the Society, during the relevant period, by one, or not more than two persons. Where the award is made to a joint display by two individuals each will be awarded a Medal. A display shall not be disqualified for the Tilleard Medal by reason of the fact that it contains borrowed material, provided that the amount thereof is small and its source is disclosed.

The Lee Medal

The Lee Medal shall be a silver-gilt medal of the approved design and shall be awarded for the best 5 p.m. presentation at an ordinary meeting dealing with any aspect of philately given by one person, or jointly by two people being either a Fellow or Member.

A display shall not be disqualified for the Lee Medal by reason of the fact that it contains borrowed material, provided that the amount thereof is small and its source is disclosed.

The Walton Medal

The Walton Medal shall be awarded for the best digital presentation online dealing with any aspect of philately given by one person, or jointly by two people being either a Fellow or Member.

The Walton Medal, first awarded in 2026, is the successor to the Lee Medal awarded for digital presentations online that was awarded between 2021 and 2025. The design of the Walton Medal will be available soon.

Royal Philatelic Society London Medal

Council shall have the power to award from time to time at its absolute discretion a Medal to be known as the Royal Philatelic Society London Medal. The Medal shall be a silver medal of the approved design and shall be awarded to a Fellow or Member who, in the opinion of Council, has rendered outstanding service to the Society otherwise than in the course of duty as an Officer of the Society.
