Egypt Stamps and Postal History
Postage stamps tell the story of the evolution of global communication during the nineteenth century. Beyond their postal function, they reflect the political, cultural, and technological developments of their time.
Owing to its strategic geographical location, Egypt has been one of the world’s most significant postal crossroads since ancient times. The modern history of the Egyptian postal service began in 1866 with the issuance of the country’s first postage stamps. This landmark was followed by a succession of definitive and commemorative issues that mirrored Egypt’s development and the changing needs of its postal system.
This exhibit presents a selection of Egypt’s earliest and most significant stamp issues, illustrating the rich heritage of Egyptian philately and highlighting the country’s important role within the international postal network during a remarkable period of postal history.
The exhibit includes:
- First Issue (1866)
- Second Issue (1867)
- Third Issue (1872)
- Fourth Issue – De La Rue (1879)
- Kingdom of Egypt Pictorial Issue – Crown Overprint (1922)
- King Fouad Definitive Issue (1923)
- King Farouk Definitive Issue (1938)
- Commemorative Issues (from 1925)
