SUMMARY:18 Oct 26 - South West Regional Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The South West Regional Meeting will take place on 18th October 2026 at the Tiverton Hotel. \n\n\n\nOur Autumn South West meeting will begin with something a little different as Bob Wheeler will display part of his outstanding collection of more obscure GB items! His collection is an eclectic mix of original artwork\, proofs\, trials and all things devoid of any actually issued stamps! The first part of the display will cover the Victorian period from the pre-stamp era to the end of the reign with the second half covering the Kings. The display promises to be full of unique and rare items\, seldom if ever displayed\, and as such is not to be missed. The afternoon will again be a farrago of members one and two frame displays. \n\n\n\nFor more details\, contact Ian Pinwill. \n\n\n\n\nBob Wheeler will be displaying GB With A Difference \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Society wishes to acknowledge the support for our Regional Meetings offered by David Feldman SA. \n\n\n\nUK Regional Meetings\n\n\n\n\nAny member\, irrespective of where they live\, wishing to attend these meetings should please contact the Society for further details. SUMMARY:3 Nov 26 - Zoom - Smokes for the Troops
DESCRIPTION:by Jean Wang FRPSC \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJean Wang FRPSC\n\n\n\n\n\nSmokes for the Troops:British and Canadian Tobacco Funds in World War One\n\n\n\nIn World War I\, decades before the health dangers of smoking were recognized\, newspapers and organizations such as the Over-Seas Club in London set up charitable funds to send cigarettes and tobacco (“smokes”) to British Empire troops fighting overseas. Smokes bought by donations were sent to the front with the aid of military authorities and allowed to enter duty-free. \n\n\n\nFor soldiers\, smoking relieved stress and boredom and boosted morale. The smokes sent overseas represented a piece of home and were a reminder to the men that they were not forgotten by the people they were fighting for. Providing smokes for the troops was considered patriotic and a way for people at home to contribute to the war effort. Every parcel of smokes sent to the front included a postcard addressed to the donor. The postcards returned via military post gave civilians a tangible connection to the men serving overseas\, and the messages of thanks stimulated further donations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Jean Wang FRPSC will discuss the reach and impact of British and Canadian WWI tobacco funds through study of reply postcards sent back from the front. \n\n\n\nDr. Jean Wang FRPSC is a hematologist and leukemia researcher in Toronto\, Canada. She is an active collector\, exhibitor\, presenter\, editor and author with an interest in medical and social philately. Her 5-frame exhibit on blood donation and transfusion was the first thematic exhibit to win a National level Grand Award in Canada. She is the Vice President of the Philatelic Specialists Society of Canada\, Secretary of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada\, a Director of the Vincent Graves Greene Philatelic Research Foundation\, and a Trustee of the American Philatelic Research Library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1916 tobacco card to Falkland Islands\n\n\n\n\n\nBert Thomas – Arf a ‘Mo Kaiser\n\n\n\n\n\nOther Related Sites:\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Royal Philatelic Society of Canada\n\n\n\nPhilatelic Specialists Society of Canada\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom Programme 2026/27\n\n\n\n1 Sep 263 pmGraham WintersPost Cards6 Oct 263 pmVernon MorrisThe Postal Crisis of 17753 Nov 263 pmJean WangFirst World War Tobacco Fund1 Dec 263 pmRoger JohnsonSarawak – Tales from the Ulu5 Jan 273 pmRobert HiderComparison of the first Postage Stamps issued by the six Australian States2 Feb 273 pm Marcus OrsiIrish Postal History Transition Period2 Mar 273 pmSandeep JaiswalSome of my favourite items from Jammu and Kashmir – Part 26 Apr 273 pmJan HofmeyrPhilatelic Invention in the United States4 May 273 pmGeorge HenshilwoodHaving fun with numbers1 Jun 273 pmGordon HardyMail from Great Britain to Romania pre-UPU\n\n\n\n(Last updated 29 Jul 2026) \n\n\n\nYouTube Zoom Meeting Playlist\n\nJoin Today …

SUMMARY:5 Nov 26 - Britain's Mail Coach Era 1784-1840
DESCRIPTION:by Hugh Feldman RDP FRPSL \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHugh Feldman RDP FRPSL\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the 2nd August 1784 two coaches left Bristol and London to commence a one-week experiment under the direction of John Palmer of Bath to prove that mail coaches were faster and safer for the conveyance of the mail than the current use of post boys riding horses. The experiment impressed William Pitt the Younger who appointed Palmer to the position of Surveyor and Comptroller General of the Post Office. \n\n\n\nBy the end of 1785 a total of 20 London-based routes had been contracted and by 1838 a total of 30 London based routes totaling 5\,003 miles and 21 cross mails of 2\,294 miles were in operation. The display illustrates using letters and artifacts the routes and contractors employed who provided the service. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom John Besant’s Patent No. 1574 of 1786 for a Mail Coach adopted by the Post Office \n\n\n\n\n\nLetter sheet dated “Bristol 29 Feby 1786” carried by Palmers coach at his cost before contracts were issued in 1785. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresident’s Programme 2026-2027 \n\n\n\nDateTimePresenterTitleReport10 Sep 261 pmRoyal CollectionMaterial from the Collection of His Majesty the King10 Sep 2624 Sep 261 pmSam ChiuExhibiting and Collecting Chinese Postal History\, Specializing in Cities8 Oct 261 pmBill HedleyThe Republic of Venice\, 1200-179729 Oct 261 pmThe Postal History Society Display to celebrate 90 years of the Postal History Society5 Nov 261 pmHugh FeldmanBritain’s Mail Coach Era 1784 – 184019 Nov 261 pmRex DixonAxis expansion in Europe from the 1935 Saar plebiscite through to Stalingrad10 Dec 264 pmPeter ChadwickEarly postal routes and Post Offices of Scotland17 Dec 261 pmAtef SarianEgypt14 Jan 271 pmThames Valley Philatelic FederationGroup Display by members from the Thames Valley Philatelic Federation28 Jan 274 pmDarryl FullerThe Revenues of the State of Israel11 Feb 271 pmChris HarmanThe work of Perkins\, Bacon – Security Printers – Bank Notes and Stamps – 1819 to the 1880s25 Feb 271 pmWest Indies Philatelic Study GroupGroup Display by the West Indies Philatelic Study Group4 Mar 274 pmAdriano BergaminiTwo important parts of the Austrian Empire: Croatia and Czechia11 Mar 271 pmBo IvanovicBritish Post Offices Abroad25 Mar 274 pmAngelo TerruziThe postal relations between the Kingdom of Sardinia/Italy and the Austrian Empire8 Apr 274 pmJan BergPre-colonial Samoa22 Apr 274 pmTerje HeskestadThe Evolution of the Norwegian Postal System\, 1719 to GPU6 May 271 pmLaurence KimptonAirmails across the Middle East and India\, 1918-193220 May 271 pmRailway Philatelic GroupDisplay by the Railway Philatelic Group3 Jun 271 pmPresidentDominica17 Jun 271 pmJack ZhangAspects of Great Britain Postal History with Focus on Sir Rowland Hill and the Penny Black24 Jun 27 Annual General Meeting 8 Jul 27 Devonshire Bowl \n\n\n\nLast updated 17 Aug 2026 \n\n\n\nMembers Meeting Documents – Slides\, Handouts and Videos \n\nJoin Today …

SUMMARY:19 Nov 26 - Axis Expansion In Europe
DESCRIPTION:by Rex Dixon FRPSL \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRex Dixon FRPSL\n\n\n\n\n\nAxis Expansion In Europe From The 1935 Saar Plebiscite Through To Stalingrad\n\n\n\nThere were many border changes and changes in administration in Europe in the period leading up to the Second World War\, mostly peaceful\, and into the wartime period\, by then often as a result of fighting. This display attempts to illustrate these many changes\, more than you may be aware of\, by changes in the stamps used\, in town names and their postmarks and with items of propaganda including postcards. \n\n\n\nPre-war changes included the Saar plebiscite in January 1935; the Anschluss of Austria in spring 1938; the end of Czechoslovakia in 1938/39; the German annexation of Memel in March 1939; and the Italian occupation of Albania and her attempt to invade Greece. \n\n\n\n\n\nGermany’s invasion of Poland saw the Free City of Danzig and much of western Poland annexed to the Reich. The Soviet Union stabbed Poland in the back and annexed the east. The central rump became the General Government. The Soviets pressured the Baltic states into accepting being taken under protection\, but Finland resisted\, resulting in the Winter War. In March 1940 the Finns had to sue for peace; they lost Karelia. \n\n\n\n\n\nA postcard of a sketch dated 4.1.1940 by Otto Engelhardt-Kyffhäuser of Maria Eppler\, an ethnic German refugee from Soviet-occupied eastern Poland.\n\n\n\n\n\nOtto Engelhardt-Kyffhäuser’s portrait of Maria Eppler used on a stamp to mark the first anniversary of the General Government.\n\n\n\n\n\nIn May 1940 the Phoney War ceased when Germany invaded France through the Low Countries. Germany annexed Luxembourg and Alsace-Lorraine\, and Italy annexed Menton. In the east\, Romania was the big loser\, with Hungary\, the USSR and Bulgaria each grabbing portions; and the Baltic States became Soviet Socialist Republics. \n\n\n\nApril 1941 saw Yugoslavia broken up by her neighbours\, and Greece also fell. With Operation Barbarossa against the USSR\, Reich commissariats were established in the Ostland and in the Ukraine. Finland joined in and retook Karelia and established a front area\, East Karelia. Romania reoccupied Bessarabia and created Transnistria\, centred on Odessa. The Wehrmacht’s surrender at Stalingrad marked the end of Axis expansion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresident’s Programme 2026-2027 \n\n\n\nDateTimePresenterTitleReport10 Sep 261 pmRoyal CollectionMaterial from the Collection of His Majesty the King10 Sep 2624 Sep 261 pmSam ChiuExhibiting and Collecting Chinese Postal History\, Specializing in Cities8 Oct 261 pmBill HedleyThe Republic of Venice\, 1200-179729 Oct 261 pmThe Postal History Society Display to celebrate 90 years of the Postal History Society5 Nov 261 pmHugh FeldmanBritain’s Mail Coach Era 1784 – 184019 Nov 261 pmRex DixonAxis expansion in Europe from the 1935 Saar plebiscite through to Stalingrad10 Dec 264 pmPeter ChadwickEarly postal routes and Post Offices of Scotland17 Dec 261 pmAtef SarianEgypt14 Jan 271 pmThames Valley Philatelic FederationGroup Display by members from the Thames Valley Philatelic Federation28 Jan 274 pmDarryl FullerThe Revenues of the State of Israel11 Feb 271 pmChris HarmanThe work of Perkins\, Bacon – Security Printers – Bank Notes and Stamps – 1819 to the 1880s25 Feb 271 pmWest Indies Philatelic Study GroupGroup Display by the West Indies Philatelic Study Group4 Mar 274 pmAdriano BergaminiTwo important parts of the Austrian Empire: Croatia and Czechia11 Mar 271 pmBo IvanovicBritish Post Offices Abroad25 Mar 274 pmAngelo TerruziThe postal relations between the Kingdom of Sardinia/Italy and the Austrian Empire8 Apr 274 pmJan BergPre-colonial Samoa22 Apr 274 pmTerje HeskestadThe Evolution of the Norwegian Postal System\, 1719 to GPU6 May 271 pmLaurence KimptonAirmails across the Middle East and India\, 1918-193220 May 271 pmRailway Philatelic GroupDisplay by the Railway Philatelic Group3 Jun 271 pmPresidentDominica17 Jun 271 pmJack ZhangAspects of Great Britain Postal History with Focus on Sir Rowland Hill and the Penny Black24 Jun 27 Annual General Meeting 8 Jul 27 Devonshire Bowl \n\n\n\nLast updated 17 Aug 2026 \n\n\n\nMembers Meeting Documents – Slides\, Handouts and Videos \n\nJoin Today …

SUMMARY:17 Dec 26 - Egypt
DESCRIPTION:by Mr. Atef Sarian \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAtef Sarian\n\n\n\n\n\nEgypt Stamps and Postal History \n\n\n\nPostage stamps tell the story of the evolution of global communication during the nineteenth century. Beyond their postal function\, they reflect the political\, cultural\, and technological developments of their time. \n\n\n\nOwing to its strategic geographical location\, Egypt has been one of the world’s most significant postal crossroads since ancient times. The modern history of the Egyptian postal service began in 1866 with the issuance of the country’s first postage stamps. This landmark was followed by a succession of definitive and commemorative issues that mirrored Egypt’s development and the changing needs of its postal system. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibit presents a selection of Egypt’s earliest and most significant stamp issues\, illustrating the rich heritage of Egyptian philately and highlighting the country’s important role within the international postal network during a remarkable period of postal history. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit includes: \n\n\n\n\nFirst Issue (1866)\n\n\n\nSecond Issue (1867)\n\n\n\nThird Issue (1872)\n\n\n\nFourth Issue – De La Rue (1879)\n\n\n\nKingdom of Egypt Pictorial Issue – Crown Overprint (1922)\n\n\n\nKing Fouad Definitive Issue (1923)\n\n\n\nKing Farouk Definitive Issue (1938)\n\n\n\nCommemorative Issues (from 1925)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresident’s Programme 2026-2027 \n\n\n\nDateTimePresenterTitleReport10 Sep 261 pmRoyal CollectionMaterial from the Collection of His Majesty the King10 Sep 2624 Sep 261 pmSam ChiuExhibiting and Collecting Chinese Postal History\, Specializing in Cities8 Oct 261 pmBill HedleyThe Republic of Venice\, 1200-179729 Oct 261 pmThe Postal History Society Display to celebrate 90 years of the Postal History Society5 Nov 261 pmHugh FeldmanBritain’s Mail Coach Era 1784 – 184019 Nov 261 pmRex DixonAxis expansion in Europe from the 1935 Saar plebiscite through to Stalingrad10 Dec 264 pmPeter ChadwickEarly postal routes and Post Offices of Scotland17 Dec 261 pmAtef SarianEgypt14 Jan 271 pmThames Valley Philatelic FederationGroup Display by members from the Thames Valley Philatelic Federation28 Jan 274 pmDarryl FullerThe Revenues of the State of Israel11 Feb 271 pmChris HarmanThe work of Perkins\, Bacon – Security Printers – Bank Notes and Stamps – 1819 to the 1880s25 Feb 271 pmWest Indies Philatelic Study GroupGroup Display by the West Indies Philatelic Study Group4 Mar 274 pmAdriano BergaminiTwo important parts of the Austrian Empire: Croatia and Czechia11 Mar 271 pmBo IvanovicBritish Post Offices Abroad25 Mar 274 pmAngelo TerruziThe postal relations between the Kingdom of Sardinia/Italy and the Austrian Empire8 Apr 274 pmJan BergPre-colonial Samoa22 Apr 274 pmTerje HeskestadThe Evolution of the Norwegian Postal System\, 1719 to GPU6 May 271 pmLaurence KimptonAirmails across the Middle East and India\, 1918-193220 May 271 pmRailway Philatelic GroupDisplay by the Railway Philatelic Group3 Jun 271 pmPresidentDominica17 Jun 271 pmJack ZhangAspects of Great Britain Postal History with Focus on Sir Rowland Hill and the Penny Black24 Jun 27 Annual General Meeting 8 Jul 27 Devonshire Bowl \n\n\n\nLast updated 17 Aug 2026 \n\n\n\nMembers Meeting Documents – Slides\, Handouts and Videos \n\nJoin Today …

SUMMARY:5 Jan 27 - Zoom - The First Australian Postage Stamps
DESCRIPTION:By Robert Hider \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Hider\n\n\n\n\n\nComparison of the First Postage Stampsissued by the Six Australian States\n\n\n\nRobert looks back through history to compare the first Postage Stamps issued in Australia\, 1850-1865. \n\n\n\nAlthough we think of Australia as being made up of a number of States\, the first stamps were issued by what were at the time Colonies (or in the case of Victoria\, a pre-Colony)\, with the concept of States emerging later in 1900 with Federation. \n\n\n\nRobert will describe the stamps produced over the period 1850-1865 by each of what became the Australian states. Each adopted a different approach. New South Wales and Victoria designed\, engraved and printed their stamps in Australia. In the case of Queensland\, South Australia and Western Australia\, the stamps were designed in Australia\, but initially engraved and printed in London. In Tasmania\, the first (temporary) stamps were printed in Australia and then followed by issues that were engraved in London. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThese different approaches led to a fascinating range of stamps.  Robert will describe these different approaches and indicate how some were more successful than others in producing good quality postage stamps.  The series of postage stamps released were as follows: \n\n\n\n\nNew South Wales released a set of three imperforate stamps on 1 January 1850\, known as the “Sydney Views”.\n\n\n\nVictoria released a set of three imperforate stamps on 3 January 1850\, known to philatelists as “Half-Lengths”\n\n\n\nVan Diemen’s Land (the original colonial name of Tasmania) released a set of two imperforate stamps on 1 November 1853.\n\n\n\nWestern Australia released the One Penny Black Swan on 1 August 1854.\n\n\n\nSouth Australia released a set of two imperforate stamps on 1 January 1855\, featuring the “Chalon Head”.\n\n\n\nQueensland released a set of three “Chalon Head” definitive stamps on 1 November 1860.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarly stamps of Tasmania\, South Australia\, New South Wales\, Western Australia\, Victoria\, and Queensland.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\n\nYouTube Zoom Meeting Playlist\n\nJoin Today …\n\n\n\nZoom Programme 2026/27\n\n\n\n1 Sep 263 pmGraham WintersPost Cards6 Oct 263 pmVernon MorrisThe Postal Crisis of 17753 Nov 263 pmJean WangFirst World War Tobacco Fund1 Dec 263 pmRoger JohnsonSarawak – Tales from the Ulu5 Jan 273 pmRobert HiderComparison of the first Postage Stamps issued by the six Australian States2 Feb 273 pm Marcus OrsiIrish Postal History Transition Period2 Mar 273 pmSandeep JaiswalSome of my favourite items from Jammu and Kashmir – Part 26 Apr 273 pmJan HofmeyrPhilatelic Invention in the United States4 May 273 pmGeorge HenshilwoodHaving fun with numbers1 Jun 273 pmGordon HardyMail from Great Britain to Romania pre-UPU\n\n\n\n(Last updated 29 Jul 2026)

SUMMARY:6 May 27 - Middle East and India Airmails
DESCRIPTION:by Laurence Kimpton \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaurence Kimpton\n\n\n\n\n\nAirmails across the Middle East and India\, 1918-1932\n\n\n\n by Laurence Kimpton \n\n\n\nThe Middle East occupied a strategic location in the early development of air transport. The need to carry mail quickly and efficiently was a major incentive in the development of the air services from Europe to the Middle East\, India and beyond. At the end of the First World War the British Government was particularly concerned with improving communications to Iraq and India. The display begins with covers carried on the pioneer flights which crossed the Middle East in 1918 and 1919\, including those competing in the air race to Australia. It continues with mail\, from a variety of countries\, flown on the RAF Cairo-Baghdad Air Mail Service from 1921 to 1926 and mail carried on the competing Haifa-Baghdad Overland Mail Service. The development of regular air services by Imperial Airways\, at first from Cairo to Baghdad in 1927 and then to India from 1929 is then shown\, including covers flown on survey flights. The display also shows a variety of covers flown by rivals to Imperial Airways: by KLM from Amsterdam to the Dutch East Indies from 1924 and by the French airlines\, AULO and Air Orient from 1930. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Persia\, the German Junkers company set up an airline\, Junkers Luftverkehr Persien\, which developed internal services\, including connections with Imperial Airways\, and an alternative route to Europe\, via Moscow. Covers flown on survey flights from 1924 and on regular services from 1928 are shown. Besides mail carried by the airlines\, the display includes mail flown by pioneer aviators\, mostly British\, Australian and French\, including Alan Cobham\, Bert Hinckler and Charles Kingsford Smith. Some pioneer pilots were involved in developing air routes\, but most were aiming to set distance and time records or were just seeking adventure.
